UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has granted the United States permission to utilize British military bases for the purpose of targeting Iranian missile storage facilities and launch sites. This decision follows a request from Washington aimed at addressing specific defensive needs.
Starmer stated that the move is intended to prevent Iran from launching missiles across the region, which poses a threat to innocent civilians and could endanger British lives. He emphasized that the UK is not officially joining offensive operations but is committed to ongoing defensive actions in the area.
In his remarks, Starmer pointed out that over 200,000 British citizens are currently in the Middle East, whose safety is jeopardized by Iran’s reckless actions. He noted that British fighter jets have been successfully intercepting Iranian aerial threats, but further action is necessary to neutralize the risk by destroying missiles at their storage and launch locations.
The UK government plans to release an official legal justification for this decision soon, which Starmer asserts aligns with international law.
Recent developments in the region have escalated tensions significantly. On February 28, the United States and Israel initiated a large-scale military campaign against Iran, resulting in a targeted airstrike that killed Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other key figures. In retaliation, Tehran launched extensive ballistic missile attacks against American bases and allied territories in the Middle East, including Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, and the UAE.
On March 2, Lebanon entered the conflict on Iran’s side, launching missile strikes into northern Israel. In response, the Israel Defense Forces began targeting Hezbollah positions throughout Lebanon. Concurrently, an Iranian drone attack targeted the British airbase at Akrotiri in Cyprus.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has authorized US forces to use British military bases to target Iranian missile sites, citing the need to protect civilians and British lives. This decision comes amid heightened military actions in the region following a US-Israeli campaign against Iran.
