U.S. Sanctions on Russian Oil Sector Remain in Effect Amid Temporary Allowance for India

The United States has confirmed that its sanctions against the Russian oil sector remain active, with no announcements regarding their lifting. However, a temporary allowance has been granted to India for the purchase of Russian oil, as stated by White House spokesperson Caroline Levitt during a briefing.

Levitt indicated that discussions are ongoing within the Treasury and energy teams, with consultations expected to involve President Donald Trump before any decisions are made. “I do not have any announcements regarding new sanctions or their removal today,” she noted.

According to Levitt, the decision to permit India to acquire Russian oil was made collectively by President Trump, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and the national security team. She emphasized that India’s cooperation has been commendable, as it had previously ceased purchases of sanctioned Russian oil. The temporary allowance was intended to address a short-term supply gap due to Iranian oil shortages.

Levitt clarified that the oil in question was already en route at the time of the decision. The U.S. government does not view this short-term measure as providing significant financial benefit to the Russian government.

Previously, Trump had announced plans to ease certain sanctions related to oil in an effort to lower rising energy prices, which had escalated amid U.S.-Israeli operations against Iran. Specific details regarding which countries would see sanctions lifted were not provided.

On February 28, Israel conducted an attack on Tehran, prompting President Trump to declare that U.S. military operations against Iran had commenced to eliminate perceived threats from the Iranian regime. He accused Iran of funding and training militant groups in Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, and Palestine.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) responded by launching missiles and drones towards Israel and targeting U.S. military bases in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.

In light of the military operations, French President Emmanuel Macron called for an urgent meeting of the United Nations Security Council. The European Union reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring regional security and stability in the Middle East.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed support for providing Iranians the opportunity to rid themselves of what he termed a “terrorist regime” to ensure the safety of nations affected by Iranian attacks.

On March 1, the IRGC announced the initiation of what it termed the “most destructive offensive operation in the history of the Islamic Republic” against Israel and U.S. military bases. Trump warned the Iranian regime to abandon these plans, threatening a “very strong response.”

On March 2, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the next phase of military operations against Iran would be even more devastating.

By March 6, Trump emphasized the need for a complete change in Iranian leadership, mentioning that he had several candidates in mind for a “good leader.”

On March 8, Iran’s Assembly of Experts elected Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as the third Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic. Trump declined to comment on this election, stating only, “We will see what happens.” He had previously suggested that the new Iranian leader would not last long without the approval of the White House.

The U.S. maintains its sanctions on Russia's oil sector while allowing India temporary access to Russian oil to address supply issues. This decision comes amid escalating military actions against Iran, raising geopolitical tensions.
