The United States did not share specific operational details or timelines regarding airstrikes on Iran with the United Kingdom prior to a joint operation with Israel. This decision coincided with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s refusal to allow Washington to utilize British military bases for the operation.
Following this development, U.S. President Donald Trump criticized the UK and Starmer, stating, “We are not dealing with Winston Churchill.” Typically, the UK supports U.S. military initiatives, making the lack of advance notice from London unusual.
While the British government was aware of the impending military action due to the buildup of U.S. forces in the region and intelligence reports, they did not receive information regarding the exact timing or operational specifics of the strikes. Consequently, the decision to evacuate the British embassy in Tehran was made without a clear understanding of when the operation would commence.
Prior to the U.S. action against Iran, the UK had denied Washington permission to conduct strikes from bases such as Diego Garcia and Fairford, citing international law. However, on Sunday evening, Prime Minister Starmer reversed this stance, permitting U.S. access to Diego Garcia for “specific and limited defensive purposes.” In response to Trump’s criticism, Starmer asserted that he would always act in the national interests of the UK.
The U.S. chose not to inform the UK about specific details of airstrikes on Iran, leading to diplomatic tensions. Despite initial refusals, the UK later allowed U.S. military access to a key base.
