Slovak Interior Minister Matus Šutaj Eštok said during a briefing that there were about 800 passengers on both trains, and both trains, he said, were “full of students.”
The minister confirmed that 11 people were hospitalized, and dozens more people received minor injuries.
The head of the Fire and Rescue Service of Slovakia, Adrian Mifkovic, said that most of the victims suffered mainly from fractures and bruises. At the same time, he warned about the possible manifestation of delayed injuries, in particular, of the cervical spine.
“Due to the physical processes that occur during a sudden train stop, some symptoms may appear even the next day,” Mifkovich explained.
Rescuers, police and medics are working at the scene.
This is the second railway accident in Slovakia in the last month. October 13 two trains collided in the east of the country – then 91 people were injured.
