Details: Answering the question that Donald Trump’s new administration changed the USA’s position on Ukraine’s membership, Fidan noted that he was not sure.
“I am not sure that the previous administration was also a supporter of Ukraine’s accession to NATO. So I think there is no new policy on this,” the minister said.
According to him, discussions on the ambitions of Ukraine on NATO accession are underway between Turkey, European partners and Ukrainian officials.
“Ukrainians are asking for NATO membership, but not for the sake of being a member of NATO. They just want to see security guarantee for their country,” he said.
“I think that security guarantee is now to prevent the restoration of war, is one of the main issues we are discussing in negotiations. Yes, Ukrainians, in particular, want to see NATO membership, if not creation of a large international coalition for deploying along the line of collision or Russians may have other ideas about guarantees and security.
Prehistory:
- In the past, Turkish President Recep TaiP Erdogan supported Ukraine’s membership in the North Atlantic Alliance.
- He later said that the United States and other NATO countries do not want to see Ukraine as a member of the Alliance, and Turkey will take their position into account when making their own decision on this.
