Details: Five informed Politico interlocutors have told the publication that internal debates were ongoing in the White House on possible cancellation of sanctions, in particular against the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline, as well as individual Russian assets in Europe.

According to sources that are close to the negotiation process, a key role in promoting the idea of removing restrictions is played by a special US representative Steve Witcoff.
He allegedly instructed his team to collect a full list of energy sanctions that were introduced by Washington against Moscow.
At the same time, a joint statement made by the White House, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Witkoff himself denied discussions on mitigating sanction pressure on Russia.
“This is not true. None of us had any conversations about the abolition of sanctions against Russia in the framework of a peace agreement with Ukraine. It is absolutely fictional and irresponsible information from Politico, a five -way edition. If they have at least a drop of journalistic honesty, they will completely refute this fiction,” they said.
One source reported that although Steve Vitcoff proposed to abolish energy sanctions against Russia, this initiative has not yet received significant support among the White House officials. Secretary of State Marco Rubio actively counteracts its implementation, trying to stop the promotion of this approach.
According to knowledgeable sources, the ideas are not only Rubio, but also the Minister of Internal Affairs, Dag Berham, who at the same time heads the Energy Domination Council at the White House. Their position indicates serious internal differences in the approach to sanction policy.
In addition, some US officials believe that Vitcoff could have been misinformed by Russia about the possible economic effect for the United States in the case of renewal of commercial relations with Moscow, – another source aware of the situation reported.
“In the White House there is an internal debate between fans of energy dominance – Berham, who wants to open markets for the American LNG,” and Vitcoff, who seeks to approach Russia, “one of the interlocutors told the publication.
Russia’s restoration of the status of the main energy supplier to Europe will be a “bloody bathroom for US producers (oil and gas – ed.),” He added.
