They noted that security in the Arctic remains a priority issue for Europe.
“NATO has clearly signaled that the Arctic region is a priority, and European allies have stepped up their efforts. We and many other allies have increased our presence, activities and investments to maintain security in the Arctic and deter adversaries. The Kingdom of Denmark, including Greenland, is part of NATO,” the leaders said.
They emphasized that security in the region should be ensured by collective efforts, including within NATO, which includes the United States, “with observance of the principles of the UN Charter, including those regarding sovereignty, territorial integrity and inviolability of borders.”
“These are universal principles, and we will not relent in defending these principles. The United States is a key partner in these efforts, as a NATO member country and a country that also has a defense agreement with the Kingdom of Denmark from 1951… Greenland belongs to its people. Denmark and Greenland, and they alone, should decide on issues that concern Denmark and Greenland,” the leaders said.
In a separate statement, the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands expressed support for Denmark against the background of Trump’s encroachments.
We will remind:
- US President Donald Trump, in recent interviews after the US operation in Venezuela, once again declared his desire to control Greenland.
- The prime ministers of Denmark and Greenland called on Trump to stop the pressure and threats.
- Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said that the forceful annexation of Greenland by the United States, if it happened, would mean the end of NATO.
