Donald Trump’s team has informed European leaders of the new administration’s intention to demand from NATO countries a significant increase in defense spending – up to 5% of their GDP. This is reported by the Financial Times, reports UNN.

Details

The plans were announced during talks with senior European officials in December.

Despite Trump’s previous statements about the possible termination of military support to Ukraine, the new administration intends to continue providing aid to Kyiv. Trump also wants to push for more defense funding from NATO allies, above the current 2 percent of GDP that most members of the alliance do.

Some NATO countries are already discussing cost increases of up to 3%. According to sources, Trump is ready to support such a decision, but under the condition of more favorable trade agreements for the United States.
