US President Donald Trump announced his intention to impose a 50% tariff on all Canadian-made aircraft and stop their certification in the United States. He explained this decision by Ottawa’s refusal to approve the operation of American Gulfstream business jets.

Direct speech: “Given that Canada wrongfully, unlawfully and persistently refuses to certify the Gulfstream 500, 600, 700 and 800 aircraft – some of the finest and most technologically advanced aircraft ever built, we hereby decertify the Bombardier Global Express aircraft, as well as all aircraft manufactured in Canada, until Gulfstream – a great American company – is fully certified, as should have been done years ago. If for some reason this situation is not corrected immediately, I am going to charge Canada a 50% duty on any aircraft sold to the US.”

Details: According to Bloomberg, this decision could have critical consequences for American air carriers. In particular, American Airlines operates about 200 Bombardier CRJ regional aircraft, and Delta Air Lines’ partners operate more than 150 such aircraft.

Analysts note that the implementation of threats to withdraw certification may lead to the grounding of about 3,000 aircraft belonging to large corporations and private individuals in the United States. At the same time, Bombardier has more than 2,800 suppliers in 47 US states, and 64% of its sales in 2024 fell on the American market.

“I don’t know what it is or where it’s coming from, but it’s more than a bad idea for the president to interfere with safety and certification,” said aviation analyst and managing director of AeroDynamic Advisory Richard Aboulafia.
