Trump Shifts Focus Away from Ukraine Peace Talks Amid Middle East Tensions

Recent reports indicate that U.S. President Donald Trump is losing interest in peace negotiations concerning Ukraine, redirecting his attention towards issues in Iran. This shift has led to a stalemate in the ongoing discussions aimed at resolving the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

According to the Financial Times, four European diplomats involved in the negotiations have noted that the situation in the Middle East has diverted Washington’s focus from reaching a peace agreement. They expressed concern that this development benefits Russia, as it leads to higher oil prices, a pause in American sanctions, and a depletion of U.S. military supplies needed by Ukrainian forces.

Negotiations between Ukrainian and Russian officials, mediated by the United States, are reportedly at risk. The last round of talks took place in Geneva on February 17-18, with the next scheduled meeting on March 5 in Abu Dhabi postponed due to U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran. No new date or location has been announced.

One EU diplomat remarked, “The Middle East has sharply redirected political attention… For us and for Ukraine, this is a disaster.”

Additionally, EU countries have been informed that shipments of American weaponry, including air defense systems, will be delayed as Washington prioritizes Middle Eastern clients. This decision could have significant ramifications for Ukraine.

European leaders are skeptical about the success of peace talks without increased pressure on Moscow. They view the negotiation process as a means to maintain U.S. interest in the situation in Ukraine, especially following the recent U.S.-Israeli military actions against Iran.

On Friday, French President Emmanuel Macron hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Paris, aiming to counter what an Élysée Palace representative described as the “eclipse effect” of the conflict in Iran. Meanwhile, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz visited the White House shortly after the start of the U.S.-Israeli attacks, bringing maps and diagrams to advocate for heightened pressure on Russia.

Despite these efforts, sources indicate that Trump remains reluctant to engage in detailed discussions, believing that Russia is strong while Ukraine is weak. Furthermore, there are no signs that the U.S. is prepared to intensify pressure on President Putin. Last week, American officials informed their European counterparts that there would be no further sanctions on the Russian oil sector.

While U.S. officials have shown interest in facilitating an end to the conflict, they appear indifferent to the terms under which the war might conclude. A White House representative stated that Trump still holds out hope for a resolution through negotiations, claiming that American negotiators have made “significant progress” in recent months.

“I don’t think the Russians want to negotiate again anytime soon. Because there is nothing to talk about,” said one participant in the private discussions.

Prior to this, Zelensky had expressed Ukraine’s readiness for a new round of negotiations to end the war, although the venue and timing remain unresolved due to differing positions between the U.S. and Russia. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had previously indicated a willingness to host the next round of talks in a trilateral format.

U.S. President Donald Trump's waning interest in Ukraine peace talks has led to a diplomatic deadlock, as focus shifts to the Middle East. European leaders express concern over the implications for Ukraine amid delays in U.S. military support.
