Details: Trump mentioned in the speech that past US presidents were interested in acquiring Greenland because of its strategic importance and said that he would like to start negotiations on “buying” Greenland as soon as possible.
“Only the United States can protect this huge piece of land, a piece of ice … so that it is good for Europe and the security of Europe and for us. And that is why I want immediate negotiations to discuss the acquisition of Greenland by the United States. Just as we have acquired many other territories in our past – and as many European countries have done, they have also bought land. There is nothing wrong with this,” said the US president.
“It would not be a threat to NATO. It would greatly improve the security of the entire alliance, NATO,” he added, then moved on to charge that NATO “gave the United States nothing in return” for overwhelming American contributions to collective security.
Also Trump mentioned the occupation of Denmark by Germany during World War II among the arguments why he wants to control Greenland.
At the same time, he stated that will not use military force to capture Greenland.
