The American president told reporters at the White House that Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa was “stunned by what happened” and emphasized that Syria was fighting side by side with American forces.
According to a source familiar with the AR, the two dead servicemen were members of the Iowa National Guard.
US Central Command said three service members were also wounded Saturday in an ambush by an ISIS operative in central Syria.
The US military said the attacker was killed in a retaliatory attack. Syrian officials said members of the Syrian security forces were also wounded in the attack.
“There will be a very serious response,” Trump said on his Truth Social social network.
Pentagon chief spokesman Sean Parnell said the dead civilian was an American translator. Parnell said the attack was aimed at soldiers involved in ongoing counter-terrorism operations in the region and that the incident was under investigation.
