US President-elect Donald Trump has chosen Republican Mike Waltz as his national security adviser, Reuters reports citing two sources.

Waltz will be responsible for briefing Trump on key national security issues and coordinating with various agencies, the newspaper said.

Information about Waltz’s future appointment is confirmed by The Washington Post. Waltz, a 50-year-old Republican, openly supports Trump and his ideas, the publication claims. Waltz also shares Trump’s stance on migration, support for Ukraine and is critical of China’s foreign policy, he said.

Waltz criticized the administration of incumbent US President Joe Biden for the way troops were withdrawn from Afghanistan in 2021 and publicly praised Trump’s views on foreign policy.

“Disruptors are often unpleasant…frankly, our national security establishment, and of course many people stuck in bad old habits in the Pentagon, need this breach. Donald Trump is that disruptor,” Waltz said at an event earlier this year.

Waltz currently chairs the House Armed Services Subcommittee, which oversees military logistics, and sits on the Select Intelligence Committee.

After Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, Waltz called on the Biden administration to provide Kyiv with more weapons to help the armed forces push back Russian forces. However, he later called on the US to reconsider its goals in Ukraine.

Personnel decisions of Donald Trump – what is known

On November 7, Axios reported, citing its sources, that Donald Trump plans to form a national security team of businessmen and company executives, avoiding the appointment of former generals to avoid the divisions he faced during his first term.

On November 8, Trump announced that Susie Wiles, one of his campaign managers, would become the White House chief of staff, the first woman to hold the position.

On November 11, CNN, citing sources, reported that Trump will appoint Stephen Miller as the White House’s deputy chief of staff for political affairs. Miller served as a senior adviser to Trump during his first term as president and was a prominent supporter of tough immigration policies.

Also, according to the media, Trump is most likely to choose Florida Senator Marco Rubio for the position of Secretary of State. CNN notes that this appointment will indicate the readiness of the US president-elect to intensify relations with the PRC.
