US President Donald Trump announced the pardon of Binance crypto exchange founder Changpeng Zhao. This was reported by the Wall Street Journal. The decision was made after several months of active lobbying by the company and personal efforts by Zhao, who supported the Trump family’s cryptocurrency project World Liberty Financial.

In April 2024, Zhao was sentenced to four months in prison after pleading guilty to failing to properly implement anti-money laundering measures. At the same time, Binance agreed to a $4.3 billion fine as part of an agreement with the US Department of Justice under the Joe Biden administration. The agency said the exchange has become a hub for money laundering, facilitating “billions of dollars in uncontrolled cryptocurrency transactions,” including nearly $900 million in settlements between the U.S. and Iran.

The Trump administration has taken a different stance on Binance and the crypto industry in general. In May 2025, the US Securities and Exchange Commission dropped its lawsuit against the company. Now, after the presidential pardon, Zhao and Binance have been given the opportunity to return to work in the US market. The Department of Justice’s oversight of the exchange will also end, although a separate Treasury Department program remains in place for now.

White House press secretary Caroline Levitt said the president “exercised his constitutional authority to pardon Mr. Zhao, who was persecuted by the Biden administration as part of their war on cryptocurrencies.” She added that “this war is over.”

Zhao became another representative of the technology sphere, who was pardoned by Trump. He previously exonerated Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht, Nikola founder Trevor Milton, and BitMEX co-founders Arthur Hayes, Benjamin Dalo, and Samuel Reed.

Zhao continues to hold significant influence in the crypto community, using it to promote the World Liberty Financial project. He is also reportedly in talks with the Trump family, which wants to buy a stake in Binance US. The Wall Street Journal suggests that such a deal could be part of a possible pardon agreement.
