US President-elect Donald Trump is considering the possibility of appointing former intelligence chief Richard Grenell to the post of special representative on Russia’s war against Ukraine, Reuters writes with reference to sources.
Grenell, who served as Trump’s ambassador to Germany and acting director of national intelligence during his 2017-2021 presidency, is said to play a key role in Trump’s efforts to stop Russian aggression if elected.
According to four interlocutors of the publication, there is currently no special envoy who would deal exclusively with the settlement of the Russian-Ukrainian war, but Trump is considering the possibility of creating such a position.
At the same time, the sources added that Trump may not create a special representative on this issue, although he is seriously considering such a possibility. However, there are no guarantees that Grenell will accept this position.
During a Bloomberg roundtable in July, Grenell spoke in favor of the creation “autonomous zones” to settle the war between the Russian Federation and Ukraine. He also suggested that he would not support Ukraine joining NATO in the near future.
Grenell’s supporters point out that he has a long diplomatic career and deep knowledge of European affairs. In addition to serving as ambassador to Germany, Grenell also served as the president’s special envoy for peace talks on Serbia and Kosovo.
In addition, Grenell was the main contender for the position of Secretary of State. In the end, he was passed by Republican Senator Marco Rubio.
