The Reuters agency, citing sources, writes that US President-elect Donald Trump is serious about acquiring Greenland, both to expand America’s sphere of influence in the Western Hemisphere and to consolidate his legacy.

Details: Trump on Tuesday refused to rule out the use of military or economic action to acquire the Danish overseas territory after he takes office on January 20, surprising European allies who are concerned about preserving the integrity of borders at a time of heightened global instability.

While Trump briefly floated the possibility of buying Greenland during his first term, his recent comments underscore that his desire is a deep-seated ambition, not a passing fad.

One person briefed on internal discussions with Trump told Reuters the former developer was unlikely to use military force to gain control of Greenland.

However, Trump is serious about using other means — such as diplomatic or economic pressure on Denmark — to acquire the world’s largest non-continental island, the source said.

“The real legacy is that you expanded the territory of the United States,” said the interlocutor.

“In literally 70 years, we have not added a single real estate object to our portfolio. That speaks volumes,” he added.

In 1959, two American territories – Alaska and Hawaii – became the 49th and 50th states of the United States under Republican President Dwight Eisenhower.

Another Trump associate said he had seen a list of foreign policy priorities drawn up by senior Trump officials after he won the November 5 presidential election. One of them immediately caught his attention: “Purchase of Greenland”.

Trump has portrayed the potential acquisition of Greenland as a national security imperative.

Denmark responded to Trump’s comments by saying Greenland was not for sale. Denmark controlled Greenland for hundreds of years, although its population of 57,000 now governs its own internal affairs.

Trump advisers have said they expect US foreign policy resources and attention to shift toward North and South America under the new Trump administration. Trump is suspicious of Chinese and Russian influence in a region he views as “America’s backyard,” said two Trump advisers involved in Latin American policy planning.

Three current and former Trump aides familiar with his thinking said Trump is also interested in territorial expansion as a means of creating a lasting legacy that will be remembered by generations to come.

What happened before: Copenhagen is mulling how to respond to US President-elect Donald Trump’s claims of wanting to annex Greenland, and getting signals that it’s not just a joke.
