Donald Trump’s administration has issued an ultimatum for countries seeking permanent membership in his new “Peace Council”: a contribution of at least $1 billion in cash.

Details: According to the draft charter, which was at the disposal of journalists, the structure of the new organization provides for virtually unlimited power of the chairman, who will be Trump himself.

The document describes a mechanism similar to the “buying” of influence: standard membership in the Council is limited to three years and depends on the will of the chairman. At the same time, this restriction is lifted for those states that will contribute more than $1 billion in “cash” to the fund within the first year.

“Decisions will be adopted by a majority of votes, and each member state present will have one vote, but all decisions will be subject to approval by the chairman,” the project states.

Critics of the initiative worry that Trump is trying to create an alternative or rival to the United Nations, which he has long criticized.

The draft charter gives Trump powers that are not typical for democratic international institutions. In particular, he will single-handedly decide who to invite to the organization, approve the agenda, and even have the right to appoint his successor as chairman. Trump also reserves the right to expel members from the organization, a decision that would require a two-thirds veto of member states to override.

In addition, the wording of the charter indicates that Trump plans to personally control all of the organization’s money, as well as single-handedly approve the official seal and “call meetings when he deems it necessary.”

Diplomats of several European countries, who read the proposal, called such a condition absolutely unacceptable. Bloomberg’s interlocutors said on condition of anonymity that a number of states are “strongly opposed” to the current version of the charter and are already coordinating efforts to collectively push back against these proposals.

In the charter, the purpose of the organization is outlined as “promoting stability and restoring legitimate governance.” The official launch of the structure is planned after the ratification of the agreement by the three countries.

What preceded:

  • Before Trump announced creation of the “Gaza Peace Council”, where he invited Argentine President Javier Millay and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
  • This statement caused sharp criticism from the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, who said that the details of the plan, which concerns the security of his country, were not agreed upon by anyone with Jerusalem.
  • On Friday, the White House presented the composition of the “primary executive team”, which was included exclusively loyal to Trump figures: his matchmaker and Middle East advisor Steve Witkoff, son-in-law Jared Kushner, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair.
