Article 5 is a fundamental basis for NATO, formed to protect Western Europe from the Soviet Union during the Cold War, and has since been the basis of the US Alliance.

Trump also recognized the efforts of the North Atlantic Alliance to increase defense costs.

“I asked them to increase costs to 5%over several years, and they increase them to 5%, it is a large (jump) with 2%, and many have not even paid 2%, so I think it will be very big news,” Trump said.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, who was sitting next to the US President, said “without Donald Trump would not have happened.”

“With 5% of Europeans and Canadians, they compare their defense expenditures with the expenditures of the United States. Therefore, US taxpayers will not be paying more. It is said that Europeans and Canadians will pay more.

Prehistory:

  • In his statements, Trump has once again questioned the US obligation under Article 5 of the NATO treaty on joint defense. On the way to the Summit in Hague, the US President stated that there was no single interpretation of Article 5 of the NATO treaty.
  • NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte urged to evaluate the US position on his actions and their contributions to joint defense rather than political statements, even when they are concerned.
