Reuters emphasize that despite the election promise to end the war in Ukraine on the “first day” of his presidency, Trump is increasingly disappointed due to lack of results. He began to say that the United States could give up the mediation role in the settlement of war.
Because of this, according to the interlocutors, the work of the group “lost meaning”.
“At the end, she stopped because the president did not support her. It seemed that he wanted no more, but less,” one of the officials said.
Reuters notes that they have not previously disclosed information about the existence of this working group.
The interlocutors argue that the final blow to the group was caused about 3 weeks ago, when most members of the White House National Security Council – in particular, the whole team that was engaged in war in Ukraine – was released within a large -scale “cleaning”.
The working group was created and coordinated by high -ranking national security workers, but it included representatives of the State Department, the Ministry of Finance, Pentagon and intelligence. Among the participants was the chief adviser to the Council on Europe and Russia Andrew Peak, which was removed in May.
However, one of the officials noted that Trump could decide at any time to take a harder position on Russia, regardless of the existence of this group, since it only had to prepare the appropriate options for him.
According to the interlocutors, this working group was formed in March or April, when some Trump advisers began to doubt the Kremlin’s readiness for compromises, and the rhetoric of Trump began to change towards the less condescending against the head of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin.
It is noted that the group discussed how the US could stimulate or press on the former Soviet republics, as well as countries of Eastern Europe and Asia to limit the supply of goods and energy to Russia and from Russia.
Trump himself knew about the creation or dissolution of this group is unknown.
The officials refused to discuss the details of the group’s work because of their sensitive nature, but confirmed that at the time of closure she was still at the stage of “brainstorming”. Her work was not related to the US Senate Senate.
Prehistory:
- On June 16, Trump stated that the exception of Russia from the “eight” group in 2014 was a “big mistake”, and if it did not happen, there would be no war in Ukraine. At the same time, the US President has acknowledged that Russia’s return to the format is hardly possible because it has been a lot of time.
- It is worth noting that Trump left the G7 summit ahead of schedule, where she was planned to meet with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, explaining it as “understandable reasons.”
