Trump Criticizes Supreme Court Justices Over Tariff Ruling

Former President Donald Trump has expressed dissatisfaction with two Supreme Court justices he appointed, Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett, following their vote to overturn tariffs on imports to the United States. In a post on Truth Social, Trump criticized their decision, stating that it is unusual for justices to vote against Republican interests.

Trump remarked, “What happened today with the two Supreme Court justices I appointed despite significant opposition seems to never happen with Democrats. They vote against Republicans and never against themselves, almost every time, regardless of how strong our arguments are.” He also mentioned that he did not appoint Chief Justice John Roberts, who led efforts to allow foreign nations to continue practices he described as detrimental to the U.S.

In response to the Supreme Court’s decision, Trump announced plans for new tariffs, asserting that they are already being finalized. He referred to a 10% tariff on all imports that he had previously announced following the court’s ruling.

On February 20, the Supreme Court struck down extensive global tariffs imposed by Trump under emergency powers, a decision he labeled as a “disgrace.” He indicated that he has a backup plan in place.

Trump’s tariff policy, introduced on April 2, included a minimum 10% tariff on imports from 185 countries and territories, with a 20% rate specifically for goods from the European Union and a 34% rate for China. Additionally, a 25% tariff on all imported vehicles was implemented starting April 3.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Economy commented that the 10% tariff imposed on their goods is challenging but not critical. In retaliation to the U.S. tariffs, China announced a 34% tariff on all American imports, effective April 10.

On April 9, Trump declared an increase in tariffs on Chinese imports to 125%, while China responded with an additional 84% tariff on U.S. goods. By April 10, the White House confirmed that the effective tariff rate on Chinese imports had reached 145%.

On July 12, Trump announced a 30% tariff on imports from Mexico and the EU, set to take effect on August 1. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen criticized this move, stating that such tariffs would harm businesses and consumers on both sides of the Atlantic.

On September 5, Trump signed an order reducing tariffs on Japanese cars to 15%. Later, on September 25, he unveiled a new wave of tariffs, including a 100% tariff on branded medications unless companies establish production facilities in the U.S. This also included a 25% tariff on heavy trucks and a 50% tariff on kitchen and bathroom cabinets.

Most recently, on October 6, Trump announced a 25% tariff on medium and large trucks, set to take effect on November 1, 2025.

Donald Trump has publicly criticized Supreme Court justices he appointed for their ruling against his import tariffs. He plans to implement new tariffs, emphasizing his ongoing commitment to protectionist trade policies.
