US President Donald Trump has called for the creation of a new treaty on nuclear weapons with Russia, as the current New START (or НО-3) agreement between the two countries expires on February 5.

Details: Trump noted that the New START agreement was unsuccessfully concluded and, on top of everything else, was being grossly violated. Therefore, in his opinion, instead of continuing the validity of this agreement, it is necessary to “instruct our nuclear experts to develop a new, improved and modernized agreement that will be valid for a long time in the future.”

The agreement, formally known as the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, was signed in 2010 to replace the 1991 START treaty.

New START entered into force on February 5, 2011 with an initial period of 10 years and was extended for another five years in 2021.

According to the treaty, the US and Russia undertook to reduce the number of deployed strategic nuclear warheads to 1,550 units for each country.

They also agreed to limit the number of warhead carriers, such as intercontinental ballistic missiles and heavy bombers, to no more than 700 units. Trump has previously called for China to be included in any new nuclear deal.

Earlier, Axios reported that the United States and Russia are close to concluding an agreement on the extension of the nuclear arms control treaty.

On February 4, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia stated that after the suspension of the SNO-3 treaty, the Russian Federation no longer considers itself bound by limitations on its nuclear arsenal.

And the deputy chairman of the Security Council of Russia and former president Dmitry Medvedev published a “scarecrow” about nuclear war in connection with the loss of validity of the SNO-3 treaty.
