US President-elect Donald Trump has said he will initiate the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America after taking office, calling it an “acceptable” step.

He said this on Tuesday at a press conference in Mar-a-Lago, Ukrinform’s own correspondent reports.

“We will change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of Mexico,” Trump said.

He added that it was a “great” name because the United States, he said, does “most of the work” in the region, and the gulf washes over a large portion of the United States.

At the same time, he reproached Mexico for “facilitating millions of migrant flows” to the United States.

“They can stop them, and we will introduce very serious tariffs against Mexico and Canada, because they (migrants – ed.) pass through Canada as well as drugs pass through it, and this is a record number,” Trump said.

He said he intended to impose “hefty” tariffs against neighboring countries as compensation for what he said their governments were doing.
