Details: By its decision, the United States added Bidzina Ivanishvili to the sanctions list, and also imposed restrictions on business related to the oligarch.
Bidzina Ivanishvili first left politics in 2021, but opponents of the government claimed that he continued to rule the country “from behind the scenes” and not only all ministers, but also state institutions were subordinate to him.
In 2024, Ivanishvili became the honorary president of Georgian Dream.
In recent weeks, the US has increased pressure on Georgia due to a democratic rollback, the adoption of pro-Russian laws and a crackdown on anti-government protests.
What preceded:
- The US State Department announced a ban on issuing visas to 20 people involved in the suppression of democracy in Georgia, including government officials and deputies.
- Last week, the Minister of Internal Affairs of Georgia, Vakhtang Gomelauri, and the Deputy Head of the Department of Special Tasks of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Mirza Kezevadze, came under US sanctions.
