According to the results of the vote, the majority of senators, including 79 out of 100, voted against the initiative, which provided for the suspension of the sale of tank shells to Israel. In turn, another resolution to ban the transfer of mortar shells was also not supported by the majority of senators, receiving only 19 votes in favor.
Legislators, in particular Senator Bernie Sanders, who is the initiator of these initiatives, are critical of the US military support for Israel in the context of human rights violations. Sanders believes that such aid contradicts American laws and international law, in particular in connection with the humanitarian disaster in the Gaza Strip. However, his opponents, including Democratic Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, emphasize the threats Israel faces from the activities of terrorist groups and support from Iran.
Another resolution is currently pending in the Senate, which deals with restrictions on the supply of GPS navigation systems for bombs. Israel, on the one hand, declares its efforts to provide humanitarian aid to Gaza, but difficulties with its delivery due to the blockade by the UN complicate the situation.
