“ The Pentagon has released a new national defense strategy that says the main focus of the US military will be on homeland security. Source: AFP, “European Truth” Details: At the same time, according to the document, the US will provide “more limited” support to allies in Europe and other regions. The National Defense Strategy (NDS) for 2026 is significantly different from the Pentagon’s previous policy, both in terms of emphasis on increasing the burden on allies with less support from Washington, and in terms of a softer tone towards traditional adversaries – China and Russia. “As the U.S. military focuses on protecting the homeland and the Indo-Pacific region, our allies and partners in other regions will bear the primary responsibility for their own defense, with critical but more limited support from the U.S. military,” the strategy reads. The previous NDS, published under President Donald Trump’s predecessor Joe Biden, described China as Washington’s most serious challenge and Russia as an “acute threat.” However, the new document calls for “respectful relations” with Beijing, without mentioning US ally Taiwan, which China claims as its territory. And the threat from Russia is described in the document as “constant, but manageable”, which affects the eastern members of NATO. Both Biden’s strategy and Trump’s strategy talk about the importance of defending the country’s territory, but their descriptions of the threats facing the United States differ significantly. The Trump administration’s NDS criticizes the previous administration for neglecting border security, saying it led to an “influx of illegal immigrants” and large-scale drug trafficking. “Border security is national security,” and therefore the Pentagon “will prioritize efforts to close our borders, repel forms of intrusion, and deport illegal immigrants,” the document says. The 2026 NDS also does not mention the dangers of climate change, which the Biden administration has identified as a “potential threat.” The Pentagon “will restore US military dominance in the Western Hemisphere. We will use it to protect our homeland and our access to key areas throughout the region,” the document said. We will remind: Recently, the chief of staff of the White House, Stephen Miller, outlined an epochal shift in the global role of the United States against the background of the capture of the leader of the country, Nicolás Maduro, in Venezuela. Miller said that under the “Trump doctrine” the US would use its armed forces without remorse to protect American interests, which he said were synonymous with the “future free world”. “We are a superpower. And under President Trump, we will behave like a superpower,” Stephen Miller said. Read also: Hemisphere of Donald Trump.
