The US president recalled that 91 years ago, Joseph Stalin and the Soviet regime provoked the Holodomor, a violent and deliberate famine that killed millions of Ukrainians.
“We remember the men, women and children who died during the Holodomor. We also honor those who survived the Holodomor and their descendants, who, despite Stalin’s efforts to suppress Ukraine’s national identity, built a free, independent and democratic Ukraine,” Biden said.
On the anniversary of the Holodomor, the US president confirmed his commitment to supporting the Ukrainian people in their time of need.
“For almost three years, Russia has been waging a brutal war against the Ukrainian people, trying to erase Ukraine from the world map. Russia failed in these efforts. Kyiv is free, thanks in part to the United States and more than 50 other countries pledging to provide Ukraine with the aid it needs to defend itself. My message to the Ukrainian people today is clear: the United States honors your past and stands with you in the present.
