The House of Representatives of the US Congress passed a draft law on the introduction of sanctions against officials of the International Criminal Court (ISS) in response to the issuance of an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
This is reported by CNN
The document provides sanctions for any actions by the ICC aimed at investigating or prosecuting US citizens and their allies. Specifically, it prohibits U.S. property transactions for individuals linked to such investigations and freezes and revokes their visas.
“The House of Representatives passed the ICC sanctions bill during the last session of Congress by a vote of 247 to 155. Republicans were joined by 42 Democrats.”
The bill was brought up again by Republicans, who now control both houses of Congress, after the previous Senate rejected it.
Now the document will be sent to the Senate for a final vote.
The ICC warrant for the arrest of Netanyahu and Galant – what is known
On November 21, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Galant.
The court notice states that Netanyahu is accused “in war crimes and crimes against humanity committed from October 8, 2023 to May 20, 2024.”
The pre-trial chamber recognized that there are grounds to believe that Netanyahu and Galant “deliberately and knowingly deprived the civilian population of Gaza of items necessary for survival, including food, water, medicine and medical supplies, as well as fuel and electricity.”
Members of the Israeli government have since accused the court in The Hague of anti-Semitism after issuing the arrest warrants. Minister of National Security Itamar Ben Gvir said that the court “proved that he is thoroughly anti-Semitic.”
The then High Representative of the EU for foreign policy and security policy, Josep Borrell, stated that the ICC warrants for the arrest of Israeli politicians are binding on the EU countries.
US President Joe Biden called “outrageous” issuance of arrest warrants for Netanyahu and Galant.
Great Britain announced its readiness to arrest Netanyahu on a court warrant. The head of the German Foreign Ministry, Annalena Berbock, did not rule out the possible arrest of the Prime Minister of Israel.
At the same time, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced that he would invite Benjamin Netanyahu to Budapest, and promised that he would not comply with the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant.
