Details: An explanatory note to the document states that the United States must take measures to “protect its strategic interests.” The author of the initiative insists that establishing full control over the island is a matter of US national security, especially in the context of the struggle for influence in the Arctic region.

Literally: “Greenland is critical to the security of the United States. We cannot ignore the growing threats in the Arctic and must act decisively to ensure that this region serves America’s interests.”

Details: The bill would give US President Donald Trump the authority to take “any necessary action” to gain control over Greenland.

“For too long, the American leadership has watched our adversaries undermine our geopolitical dominance,” Fine said.

What preceded:

  • The situation worsened after the US conducted a special operation in Venezuela on January 3, 2026, which, according to analysts, increased the confidence of the Trump administration in conducting an aggressive foreign policy.
  • On January 9, Trump at a meeting with oil and gas industry leaders statedthat America will get Greenland “for better or for worse.”
  • White House spokeswoman Caroline Levitt confirmedthat the administration is “considering all options,” including the use of military force, to “protect U.S. interests.”
  • The leader of Greenland’s government, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, and the leaders of key parties issued a joint statement: “This is something that the governing coalition in Greenland cannot accept under any circumstances.”
  • Prime Minister of Denmark Mette Frederiksen called the situation “a fateful moment” and warned that an attempt to seize the ally’s territory by force would mean “the end of NATO.”
  • According to European media, Great Britain and EU countries consultations have begun regarding the possible placement of a limited contingent of NATO troops on the island to deter US ambitions.
  • Brussels is also developing a package of tough sanctions against American tech giants in the event of an annexation scenario.
