According to sources, mutual defense commitment has become a reaction to both Russia’s military threat and fears of European allies regarding the reliability of US defense liabilities under NATO under Donald Trump’s Presidency.
The interlocutor of the publication in the German government emphasized that the new treaty is not a replacement of the principle of collective defense underlying the NATO fundamental treaty known as Article 5.
