The resolution demands from the UNIAN Temporary Forces in Lebana (Unifil), “cease its activity on December 31, 2026 and from that date, within one year, start an orderly and safe reduction and withdrawal of their staff in close consultation with Lebanon’s government in order to make the Government Lebanon with the sole safety of Lebanon’s safety.”
Acting US Ambassador to the UN Dorothy Shei stated that this would be the last continuation of the UNIFIL mandate that the United States will support. According to her, the safety situation in Lebanon has changed compared to last year, which creates “the opportunity for Lebanon to take on more responsibility.”
The UNIFIL mandate was expanded in 2006 after the Monthly War between Israel and Hezbolla, so that peacekeepers help the Lebanese army to keep part of the south of the country free from armed units.
