“We are informed of the continuation of temporary protection status for Ukrainian refugees for another year, by March 2027. It is very important to give these people clarity to plan their lives and for their safety,” Chernyshov said.

According to him, as of the EU there are now about 5 million Ukrainians under the status of temporary protection, who left Ukraine after the start of a full -scale invasion. 60% of them are in Germany, Poland or the Czech Republic. Germany accepted the most Ukrainians – more than 1.2 million.

“We will be ready to voluntarily return part or most Ukrainians as soon as the war is over and there is a stable peace. We are preparing special centers in the capitals of the European Union, which will be called unity hubs and who will provide professional services as for those Ukrainians who consider the possibility of voluntary return home after reaching peace,”

He noted that the unity’s hubs will also help those who will decide to integrate into the European Union.

“They need to know the language. They must have a job. They must be professionally developed. They must be an asset. We will work on it,” Alexei Chernyshov explained.

As the European Pravda reported, the European Commission has proposed a project to the EU Council recommendations that will allow Member States to prepare for the coordinated completion of temporary protection for Ukrainians. They will be offered either the transition to a new legal status in the country of stay or assistance in returning home. The list of proposed recommendations can be read here.

Also that temporary protection of Ukrainians in the EU will continue for another year, reported “Euro Truly” Ambassador of Ukraine to the EU Vsevolod Czentsov.

As of March 31, 2025 EU temporary protection status had just over 4.26 million peoplewho are not EU citizens and escaped from Ukraine as a result of full -scale Russian aggression.
