The Tennis Federation of Ukraine supported the former Russian tennis player Darja Kasatkin (15), which changed their citizenship to Australian.

The 28-year-old Kasatkina, which at the time of change of citizenship was the second racket of Russia, repeatedly condemned the regime of Russian President Vladimir Putin, as well as a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which took place on February 24, 2022.

Already today, May 9, Darya Kasatkin will meet with the second racket of Ukraine Marta Kostyuk within the second circle of the WTA 1000 series in Rome. Approximate start of the match – At 4:30 pm Kyiv time.

The champion appealed to the tennis Federation of Ukraine or not given to the Ukrainian tennis players recommendations for handshake with the former Russian.

“The federation did not give any recommendations for handshake,” Yuri Sosnovsky said.

“Of course, sports should avoid unnecessary politicization, be a platform for fair competition and unification of people. And when such horrible and unfair events take place as a full -scale invasion of Russia into Ukraine, accompanied by numerous military crimes, violence and destruction, sometimes silence.

An example of a conscious position was shown by Darya Kasatkin, a former Russian athlete, who turned under the flag of Australia. She has repeatedly publicly condemned Russian aggression against Ukraine and criticized the actions of the Russian authorities. We respect her personal choice and courage in defending our beliefs. This demonstrates dedication to the principles of justice and humanity, as well as the desire to be part of the international community that seeks peace and cooperation.

In our opinion, Daria Kasatkina’s decision to change her sports citizenship from Russian to Australian is an eloquent consequence of a principled anti -war position. The Federation continues to support Ukrainian tennis players and tennis players who represent our country in the sports arena.

At the same time, we consider it necessary to celebrate and support those athletes from other countries who are not afraid to speak the truth about the war and its consequences. We believe that the voice of athletes who oppose the war is important for drawing the attention of the world community to the tragedy that is happening in Ukraine, “the statement said.

The topic of Casatkina’s citizenship was discussed for a long time. Polish journalist Dominic Senkovsky He notedwho asked her about it in 2022 during Rolan Harros, then the tennis player denied that opportunity. In 2023 Kasatkin in an interview with British media statedthat she “as a Lesbian who condemns the war, is dangerous to return home, given the existing regime.”

The account of 28-year-old tennis players 8 single WTA titles and one paired. In 2022, she played the semifinals of the Open French Championship, now it is her best achievement in Grand Slam tournaments.

We will add that this is not the first time in the last 3 years, when a Russian tennis player changes citizenship. After WTA forbade such players to perform under the Russian flag, Varvara Grachov became a Frenchwoman, Natela Jalamidze began to represent Georgia at international tournaments, Elina Avanenets became a citizen of Armenia.
