As a result of carbon monoxide poisoning, four people died in Ukraine during February 7-8, the State Emergency Service (ESES) reports.

“In less than two days on February 7-8, the “silent killer” caused 9 tragic cases across the country. Among the victims are whole families with very small children,” rescuers say.

According to the agency, the tragedies that covered eight regions occurred mainly in rural areas.

In particular, on February 8 in the village of Four people were injured in Zhukivtsi, Kyiv Oblast due to violations of the rules for using a generator. Among them are children born in 2024 and 2025. Four people (two in each region) died due to a malfunction of the furnace and gas heating in Ternopil Oblast and Vinnytsia.

“The main reasons are improper use of alternative sources of energy and heating,” the State Emergency Service explained.

The rescuers clarified that the most common cause of poisoning these days is the operation of generators (five cases). People continue to put them too close to windows or even indoors.

The police emphasize that carbon monoxide has no smell and color, but is extremely dangerous – poisoning can occur in a matter of minutes. Generators and fuel should only be used outdoors.

Threats to life and health due to improper use of generators have been repeatedly reported. For example, in Odesa region, three children were poisoned by carbon monoxide due to an improperly installed generator in the house. It happened in January 2024.
