The State Duma of Russia has forbidden to deprive the citizenship of residents of the occupied territories of Ukraine, which Moscow wrote in its constitution. The amendment was made to the law on extension of the list of grounds for deprivation of the acquired Russian citizenship for committing crimes.

About 20 new articles have been added to the list of crimes that make it possible to deprive the acquired citizenship. After the law enters into force, the number of grounds for deprivation of acquired citizenship will exceed 80.

The speaker of the State Duma Vyacheslav Volodin states that the adoption of the bill “will provide a systematic and holistic mechanism of grounds for termination of citizenship of the Russian Federation and protection of national security.”

In April 2023, Russian leader Volodymyr Putin signed amendments to deprived the acquired citizenship for “actions that threaten national security”, including for military “fakes” and “discrediting” of the Russian army, and in August 2024 – a law that provides for a deprivation.
