“The sprone looked out the window, and there tanks with the letter Z – the Russians came in.” Gutarina’s shining story

WITH Daria-Olga Gutarina We met at the September 2025 World Boxing Championship in Liverpool.

The 22-year-old Ukrainian made her debut at this level among adults. And in parallel continues to speak in the U-23 age category, where in the role of the current European champion will defend its title at the Continental Championship in November in Budapest.

A full-scale invasion of 18-year-old Gutarin in Mariupol, where she and her family moved in 2016.

History, as her family was in occupation and traveled to the territory controlled by Ukrainian troops, is unlikely to leave someone indifferent. The direct language of Daria-Olga.

The beginning of the war in Mariupol – For the first two weeks after a full-scale invasion, we sat at home, in our 9-storey building. One -bedroom apartment on the second floor. Mom, I and brother. But in the afternoon we gathered relatives and friends. And we were already 11. Aunt, uncle, four children, two of whom for 10 years, one 8 years and a 6-month-old baby. Soon they began to spend the night with us.

In the first days of the war we sat down and transferred our money. We decided that we would have enough for the first time. They made money next to the phones.

First, we had the water in the high -rise building, then light, then gas. We were forced to ignite bonfires on the street – cooked food. The pads were a real delicacy, we loved them very much.

I was responsible for food. In the early days, they bought a lot. After the light was switched off, they spread the food on the balcony. Kids even ate sweet – Three candy a day. If the baby was crying, she gave her another so that she was not so sad.

In the early days of the Russian invasion there was a fuss. The people broke the grocery stores and took away everything that remained there.

The most valuable at this time in Mariupol were cigarettes and alcohol. They could be exchanged profitably.

6-month-old baby needed a mixture – She did not drink breast milk. Uncle made an ad, changed this mixture to cigarettes.

Tanks – One morning I woke up with a strange sound. He has never heard it before. I tell my brother to look at the window what it is. He looked, returned to me and calmly replied: “The tanks are going.” We have not seen them so far. I look out the window, look, really slowly go tanks. They sit on 3-4 people, and the tanks are military with machines. I see the letter of the letter Z, I understand that these Russians have entered our area.

At that moment we had nothing anymore – No connection, no water, no light. Budge mom, they say, wake up, tanks on the street, you need to decide what we will do next. We decided that we would wait a day or two and we would leave the occupation.

In two hours the tanks returned. They were already at full speed and shot on the go. Our military gave them nuts.

“They took away weapons from the dead Russians.” He defended Mariupol in the first weeks of full -scale invasion

Our house was at the epicenter of the shootout. We flew into the yard, we ran to the corridor. Panic began. Some – Hysterics. At that moment, she gave herself a word that I would only pay when we leave it. And as a result, he followed.

But then almost all family members cried in the hallway. She comforted them in turn as she could. She began to submit the “deep exhalation three to four” commands. Performed gymnastics. They calmed down a little. And then a stranger came running, he says that we will quickly get out of there, they say, the house is burning.

I run to the kitchen, look at the window that goes into the yard. There were three cars there. One is already burning. She noticed that our car survived at that time. When the bustle passed, they decided to descend into the basement.

We had a neighbor. Already at age, blind. We go to her apartment, and she has a large hole in the wall. Where the balcony was before. There were 3-4 arrivals in our house. Worn by neighbors food and water. They tried to close the hole in the wall to keep some warmth. She had to take her son. I know nothing about her further fate …

In the basement – We spent 7 days in the basement. Without quarrels was not done – We have such a family that we have a sin often quarrel because of the little things. And in such a tense situation, there are even more.

However, there were more pleasant moments. In the basement celebrated the birthday of the mother. I was inflated by balloons, I even found flowers for her. We had a lot of candles. I said in the apartment: “If no one in the kitchen, the candle should be repaid.” We saved them.

On the fourth day, the basement began to consult what to do next. Water and products were still, but they would not have enough for a long time. At that time, the grandfather’s car was already burned, and his mother was beaten with fragments, she was in a non -working condition.

Shooting of the green corridor – One day my mother woke up earlier than others and went to look for a car in the morning. To leave Mariupol. We needed a truck – We did not want to divide and leave 2 people. Prior to that, the so -called green corridor – many cars left it. We did not dare then. And, as it turned out later, we were lucky – it was at that time the Russians shot a lot of civilian cars.

On the same day, my mother found a truck that was covered with awning. There was a family: a driver, a very old woman and 3 more people. The old grandmother had to be taken in the center of Mariupol, where there were still fighting. On a truck there was not possible to go there – She would almost probably be shot. Mom found a passenger car on which the woman was taken away.

Why did we decide to be taken into a truck? We had gasoline. On the first day of the war, we managed to buy two big canisters about the stock. One canister burned down with his grandfather’s car. We brought the second to the apartment. And she remained.

If it were not for this canister, I don’t know how we would leave.

30 checkpoints – We left March 27.

Mom came up and said that we had 20 minutes to gather. For each one suitcase. Everyone ran around the houses to collect things. I ask my mom to collect for her. I look, in her eyes a shock … I tried to bring her to her senses.

By the way, I made my boxing form and the medals won. We loaded into the car, went in the direction of Zaporozhye. They went a day. We were stopped on checkpoints every 10 minutes. Checked things. The phones have already sat down. The men were undressed – They watched whether they have patriotic Ukrainian tattoos and traces of weapons – for example, bruises from the shooting of the machine gun. And it was cold outside, snow fell.

There were checkpoints where the Russians said, “Men to exit.” And after a while they came to us, women, and they said, go, a happy road. So we checked whether we would go without our men. Aunt immediately came out of a car with a 6-month-old baby, asked to let go of a man Ika, here’s his child, he is not a military.

Released. She somehow asked her uncle what was there.

“Already for the execution of the Russians led, while they were” swollen and covered “, – answered.

However, there was a neutral attitude. I had to go through about 30 checkpoints.

There were enough unpleasant adventures. We go, I feel that the car stopped, turned around and went the other way. She then asked the driver what it was. He confessed that the car was blown up by the car. We turned around and went the other road.

Laughter of a 6-month-old baby – At 10 pm we were stopped at the Russian checkpoint. It is said that the curfew, you can not go further, spend the night in the car. And we are all very freezing. We ask what we do. We were brought to the house. The Ukrainian family met – Man, woman, baby. For the first time in a month, we warmed up there. Our 6-month-old baby started laughing. We still had three packages of food, we spent the night and left them in the morning to the owners who sheltered us.

Return to training – Even the car broke late in the evening. The driver said he would repair until 9am. As a result, they left only at 13:00. They came to the next checkpoint, heard “Glory to Ukraine” there, realized that it was our Ukrainian checkpoint. They exhaled: “Heroes Glory.”

They charged phones, called my grandparents who waited for a long time from us in the village.

In Zaporozhye, familiar aunts were spent. Then they sat on an evacuation train and went to relatives to Mukachevo. There were three days there. I told my loved ones to go abroad. I went to Ivano-Frankivsk, where my coach Anton Kosse was waiting for me. I had a great desire to restore training. The coach was lucky, he and his wife and daughter left Mariupol on the first day of the war.

She started training. And as a result, the U-22 Ukrainian Championship won, and at the championship of Europe won “bronze”. In 2024, the U-23 European Championship won.
