The National Assembly (Parliament) of South Korea on Friday voted to impeach acting President Han Deok-soo.
The proposal to impeach Khan, initiated by the opposition Democratic Party, was supported by 192 deputies, and no one spoke against it. Deputies from the ruling “Power of the People” party did not participate in the vote.
This is the first case in South Korea when the parliament announced the impeachment of at. the president
Khan will be removed from office as soon as he is served with a resolution of impeachment. The decision of the parliament must be approved by the Constitutional Court. Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok will take over the duties of president and prime minister.
“I respect the decision of the National Assembly, and in order not to add to the confusion and uncertainty, I will suspend my duties under the relevant laws and await a swift and wise decision by the Constitutional Court,” Khan said in a statement.

As reported by Ukrinform, on December 26, the main opposition party of South Korea announced that it will submit a draft law on the impeachment of Acting President Han Deok-soo.
The Democratic Party, which holds the parliamentary majority, offered to impeach Khan when he refused to approve three new Constitutional Court judges until the parties reached a political compromise.
Prime Minister Han Deok-soo became acting president after South Korea’s National Assembly (parliament) voted to impeach President Yoon Seok-yeol on December 14.
On December 3, President Yoon announced martial law. The decision was made after the opposition Democratic Party in the parliamentary Budget Committee quickly approved a reduced draft budget and filed resolutions to impeach the head of the Accounting Chamber and the chief prosecutor.
Yun later lifted martial law.
Several high-ranking officials and security forces suspected of coup d’état were released and detained in the country.
Prosecutors opened a criminal case against Yun on charges of treason.
