Literally: “The motion to impeach Khan was passed unanimously by 192 votes to 0, marking the first time parliament has impeached a sitting president.”
Details: Dak-soo became acting president after the parliament impeached President Yoon Seok-yeol, who imposed the country’s scandalous martial law, less than two weeks ago.
According to a South Korean news agency, the Democratic Party, which has a majority in parliament, filed a motion to impeach Daksoo after he refused to appoint additional judges to the Constitutional Court, which is expected to rule on Yeol’s impeachment case.
The parliamentary majority also ruled that Dak-soo’s involvement in martial law and his refusal to release two special prosecutor bills targeting former president and first lady Kim Keon-hee are grounds for impeachment.
Prehistory:
- South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol declared a state of emergency in the country on December 3. In a direct televised address to the nation, Yun said the measure was necessary to protect the country from “communist forces.”
