A scientific study by French doctor Didier Raoult on the use of hydroxychloroquine to treat COVID-19 has been officially withdrawn from a scientific journal after several years of controversy over its publication. This is stated in a statement by the Elsevier publishing house, which owns the International Journal of Antimicrobial Agents, reports UNN.

The study caused a lot of controversy when Raul promoted this drug as an effective remedy against COVID-19. However, he was later suspended from medical practice. Serious doubts have arisen regarding ethical norms and the correctness of conducting research, in particular with the participation of people.

A review panel led by independent consultant Dr. Jim Gray found problems with the study’s methodology and conclusions. After an investigation, the article was found to be unreliable and rejected as a source for further scientific research.

In addition, it was established that not all patients consented to participate in the study, as well as to receive azithromycin, which according to the protocol was to be used together with hydroxychloroquine. Three of the article’s 18 authors said they no longer wanted their names associated with the publication.

Hydroxychloroquine, originally approved for the treatment of malaria, has become the subject of active controversy in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. After initial emergency use approval for this drug in the US in March 2020, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) revoked the approval in June 2020 due to a lack of evidence of its effectiveness and safety concerns.

Raoul, who gained international attention during the pandemic, is currently fighting a legal battle over a ban on practicing medicine within France.
