According to the workers, the Russians have been targeting the museum for three weeks.
“The unique center of history and memory of the Ukrainian South suffered numerous damages – a third of the building was completely destroyed, the roof was pierced, the walls were damaged.”– wrote in the museum.
“What Russia brazenly called “its cultural heritage” yesterday, today it is mercilessly erasing from the face of the earth. Purposefully, systematically, methodically“.
The museum appeals to the world community to do everything possible to prevent the destruction of historical objects in Kherson.







Kherson Regional Museum of Local Lore Fleeing from Kherson in October 2022, the Russians robbed the two largest museums of the Kherson region: the regional local history museum and the regional art museum. In total, the occupiers stole at least 20,000 exhibits from them.
From the local history museum, the Russians took out objects that are in demand on the black market of archeology and among private collectors: rare archaeological finds from ancient times, weapons and coins. And also Sarmatian jewelry, medals and orders of the Soviet era and the Russian Empire, antique furniture of the XVIII-XIX centuries, icons and paintings.
Part of the collection of the Kherson regional museum of local history, stolen by the Russian invaders, was taken to occupied Henichesk (Kherson region).
Before the occupation, the Museum kept more than 180,000 exhibits. Among the most valuable stolen items: the “golden room”, where there was Scythian gold and silver, a lapidary – samples of ancient writing, a collection of weapons, which was started by the museum’s founder, archeologist Viktor Gashkevich.
At the end of October 2022, Tetyana Bratchenko, then director of the local history museum, was charged with treason. On the website of the Prosecutor General’s Office point outthat the ex-director is suspected of voluntarily organizing and holding events of a political nature, public activity in the Russian mass media, and voluntary cooperation with the local occupation “administration”.
In May 2025 The higher anti-corruption court satisfied the lawsuit of the Ministry of Justice regarding the application of sanctions against Tetyana Bratchenko, the former director of the Kherson Regional Museum of Local History. She by by the evidence of the Kherson peopleliterally handed over values to the invaders.
However pmuseum staff disagree with the accusations and sanctions, they noted that Bratchenko before leaving for the territory of the Russian Federation ordered to remove the most valuable things from the museum windows and put them in the fund room.
