“Greenland is ours. We are not for sale and never will be. We must not lose our long struggle for freedom,” Egede said in a written statement.
As reported, the newly elected President of the United States, Donald Trump, said that he wants Greenland to be under the control of the United States.
During his first term, Trump said he was considering buying Greenland and canceled a state visit to Denmark after Danish officials said the autonomous territory, which is part of their kingdom, was not for sale.
Since 1867, the United States has repeatedly tried to buy the world’s largest island. Greenland is part of the continent of North America, but it has close geopolitical ties to Europe and receives funding from the EU, as it is classified as an overseas territory linked to the bloc through Denmark.
