Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on Wednesday, January 15, held a telephone conversation with the future president of the United States, Donald Trump, amid tensions over the latter’s intentions to take control of Greenland.

Details: Frederiksen’s conversation with Trump concerned bilateral relations and the status of Greenland, the report said.
“In the conversation, the Prime Minister referred to the statements of the Prime Minister of Greenland, Mute Egede, that Greenland is not for sale, and the Prime Minister emphasized that the decision on independence should be made by Greenland itself,” it said.
The head of the Danish government also emphasized that her country is ready to take on greater responsibility for security in the Arctic and that “Danish companies contribute to economic growth and job creation in the United States.”
“During the conversation, the war in Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East, and relations with China were also discussed,” the Danish Prime Minister’s office added without further clarification.
Trump, who will take office on January 20, last week returned to the idea of acquiring the strategically important and mineral-rich Arctic island.
He put forward the idea during his first term, and called US control over the island, a semi-autonomous Danish territory, “an absolute necessity.”
The former US president-elect also did not rule out the potential use of military or economic means to gain control of Greenland, although his vice president, JD Vance, dismissed the possibility.
