“That’s why I urge the United States to stop threatening a historically close ally, and another country and another people that have made it very clear that they are not for sale.”
What preceded: On Sunday, Trump said that the United States needs Greenland.
“We really need Greenland, definitely, we need it for defense,” he said, describing the island, which belongs to NATO ally Denmark, as “surrounded by Russian and Chinese ships.”
Earlier, Frederiksen said that she expects respect from the United States. In addition, the US ambassador will be summoned to the Danish Foreign Ministry.
Since Trump took office, relations between Denmark and the US have become strained. It comes as Trump expressed his desire to seize Greenland, the resource-rich Danish territory in the Arctic, citing “security considerations”.
Both Denmark and Greenland insist that the island is not for sale and that it will decide its own future.
