Details: Pashinyan recalled his earlier statement that Armenia is “ready to be closer to the EU as much as the EU deems possible” and added that after that, Armenia’s agenda was about whether to officially take a course towards joining the EU.

Prime Minister’s direct speech: “But here we need to understand that this is not a unilateral or even a bilateral action. We need to be very careful in formulating the problems so as not to create new disappointments for the people on the way to solving these problems. We also need to physically imagine Armenia’s membership in the EU.”

Details: Pashinyan is convinced that Armenia’s continuation of its democratic course will bring it closer to the EU and other Western partners, but relations with its neighbors in the region are no less important for the country.

“Our future relations with the same EU must be transparent. The intentions of our partners in the EU must be transparent and so on. In principle, I cannot rule out that if we see a more or less real possibility of becoming a full member of the European Union, including keeping under control possible threats that may arise on this path, then we will not miss this moment,” said Pashinyan.

Prehistory:

  • On September 9, the European Union began negotiations on the liberalization of the visa regime with Armenia.
  • And in March 2024, the European Parliament adopted a resolution proposing to consider the possibility of granting Armenia candidate status for joining the EU.
  • After that, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that this resolution should become the subject of discussion in Armenia.
