“In order to build an independent Europe, we have to drop shackles,” she said.
According to her, the next major European project is the creation of an independent Europe that is able to form its international order and protect its own interests.
Literally: “Pointing to increasing concern in Europe about excessive dependence on the US, von der Lan has presented independence as the next stage in a number of historical European projects, such as peace after the Second World War, the formation of a common market and currency and the reunification of Europe after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1989.”
Details: The President of the European Commission has outlined four key tasks to achieve independence: to increase defensive costs to ensure peace; strengthen the level of innovation and competitiveness for sustainable growth; expand the EU, which she called “historical reunification”; as well as update and strengthen democracy to protect Member States from internal and external threats.
Direct Language: “The fact that we can now provide defense financing of up to 800 billion euros – it would be impossible. We do it because we want to defend peace with all our forces … If we do not want to just put up with the consequences of a new international order, we must form it ourselves.”
Details: According to von der Liaien, a more united and powerful Europe will have more influence in the world and help reduce dependencies, referring to the accession of Ukraine, Western Balkans, Moldova and, “Hopefully”, Georgia as one of the main tasks.
“I am deeply convinced that history is now calling us for action. As in 1989, when the wind swept the change in Europe,” she added.
Prehistory:
- German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at the President of the European Commission Ursula von Der Liaan named after Karl the Great, said that Europe is ready, if necessary, to fight for its fundamental values - freedom and democracy, thus responding to the EU’s repeated criticism.
- Merz also stated that Germany would not stay away in the case of strengthening Europe, and congratulated the “new spirit of unity” among Europeans. He cited as an example of support of Ukraine and updating trade and defense relations with Britain that happened this month.
