Details: Zalevsky said that the government’s decision on the transfer of the planes has already been taken.

“We are waiting for the response of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. Negotiations are ongoing… these are purely technical negotiations,” he said.

When asked whether Ukraine agreed to accept Poland’s offer, Zalevsky replied that Kyiv agreed.

“I believe… that the Ukrainians have decided to accept this proposal. Of course, as always, there are some technical aspects that need to be clarified,” he added.

Zalevsky said the first batch would consist of “less than ten” planes.

In December, Poland’s other deputy defense minister, Cezary Tomczyk, said that “six to eight” Soviet-made aircraft were reaching the end of their service life in the Polish armed forces and could be transferred to Ukraine as part of a possible military technology exchange deal.

Prehistory:

  • Warsaw has said it is ready to hand over MiG-29 fighter jets in exchange for access to some missile and drone technology.
  • The General Staff of Poland reported that the potential transfer of these fighters to Ukraine is due to the fact that they have reached the end of their service life and have no prospects for further modernization in the Polish Armed Forces.
  • In the fall of 2024, the Ukrainian side repeatedly called on Poland to hand over the Soviet-style MiG-29 fighter jets to it, but Warsaw explained that they could not do this in order not to weaken their own defenses.
