The American crowdfunding company Buy Me a Coffee published a meme with a North Korean soldier fighting against Ukraine. In the photo, he is lying with the phone in his hands and smiling.
The corresponding post was posted by the platform on X.
“That feeling when you read messages from those who support you,” read the caption under the photo.
Later, after outrage from social media users, the company apologized for the meme and deleted it, as well as saying that it was allegedly created by a third-party service.
“We sincerely apologize for the inappropriate meme we posted on January 5th. It was created by a third-party service we use for memes, and we removed it as soon as we realized the mistake. We deeply regret the offense caused and are taking steps to ensure it does not happen again. Thank you for holding us accountable,” the company wrote.
The Ukrainian platform UNITED24 also drew attention to the post, noting that Buy Me a Coffee was previously known for deleting Ukrainian accounts.
“Crowdfunding platform Buy Me a Coffee, known for deleting Ukrainian accounts, has faced backlash again — this time for publishing a meme with a photo of a North Korean soldier who took part in Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. North Korea sent thousands of troops to participate in the invasion of Ukraine. Users on the Internet say that such a meme is “ridiculous” and “downright crazy” for the American company that posted it,” the post reads.
