Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico will not go to Kyiv on Friday, January 17, at the invitation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi to discuss the transit of Russian gas.
This was stated by the Deputy Speaker of the Parliament of Slovakia, Tibor Gaspar, in a comment to the Russian propaganda media.
“Yesterday, Prime Minister Fico published an open letter to Zelenskyi and invited him to negotiations. Zelensky replied that he should come to Kyiv on Friday. This is impossible. I think it won’t happen,” he said.
“To humiliate without a single swear word.” Ukrainians in social networks reacted to the Ukrainian president’s response to Fico’s invitation
On January 13, Robert Fitso published a video message to Volodymyr Zelenskyi, in which he invited the President of Ukraine to hold negotiations in Slovakia, near the border with Ukraine, regarding the termination of transit of Russian gas, which allegedly “causes great damage to Ukraine itself, Slovakia and, in particular, the European Union.” He also stated that “does not want further escalation of tensions” between Slovakia and Ukraine.
After that, Zelensky invited Fico to Kyiv.
Suspension of transit of Russian gas through Ukraine and reaction of Slovakia
The agreement on the transit of Russian gas between Gazprom and Naftogaz through the territory of Ukraine expired on January 1, 2025.
In response to blocking the transit of Russian gas to the EU, the Prime Minister of Slovakia Robert Fico, who went to Moscow on December 22 for talks with the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, threatened to stop the supply of electricity during the period of shortage in the energy system of Ukraine.
Zelensky reacted to Fico’s threats. The head of state believes that Putin instructed him to open it “the second energy front” at the expense of the interests of the people of Slovakia.
On January 2, Fico threatened that Slovakia could not only stop exporting electricity to Ukraine, but also significantly reduce aid to Ukrainian refugees.
On January 11, Fitso said that he was fed up with the fact that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi travels around Europe, “begging” and “blackmailing others.” He also claimed that Russia supposedly always existed “a reliable partner” in the matter of supplying energy carriers.
On January 12, Zelensky again criticized Fico and stated that Ukraine offered assistance to the people of Slovakia during the adaptation to the lack of gas transit from Russia, but “Fico himself arrogantly refused.”
