Although the Armed Forces of Ukraine appear to have recovered some positions in Toretsk and near Pokrovsk, the Russians have new advances in Chasovoy Yar, in the Pokrovsk direction, near Kurakhovo and in the Kursk region.

This is stated in a new summary of the Institute for the Study of War.

The occupying forces of the Russian Federation have recently advanced in the area southeast of Pokrovsk, while the forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine have recovered some positions east of Pokrovsk. In particular, the footage with confirmed geolocation, published on October 17, shows that the occupiers have recently made progress in the eastern part of the village of Lysivka (west of Novogrodivka and southeast of Pokrovsk). The Russians also captured the water treatment facilities west of Novogrodivka and advanced along the landing located southwest of Selidovoy as a result of a mechanized assault by forces likely to the company.

Russian “militants” claimed that occupation forces operating southeast of Pokrovsk also allegedly advanced along a 4.35 km wide front to the northwestern outskirts of Selidovoy, south of Tsukurino and east of Novoselydivka. However, ISW found no confirmation of these Russian claims.

At the same time, other geolocated footage, published on October 17, confirms that the forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces have recently regained control over certain territories near Mykolaivka (east of Pokrovsk and west of Grodivka).

The armed forces of Ukraine have probably returned some positions within Toretsk against the background of the continuation of offensive operations of Russia in this area. ISW cites geo-located footage released as early as October 15 that shows Ukrainian forces have recently regained control of positions in the center of Toretsk. [17 жовтня спікерка оперативно-тактичного угруповання Луганськ Анастасія Бобовнікова повідомила, що«лінія зіткнення [в Торецьку] is constantly moving, so to say that today we (Defense Forces of Ukraine) control 40% or 50% of the city – very, very difficult” – note. ed.].

Russian “militants” claimed that Russian troops advanced to a depth of 2.17 km north of New York (south of Toretsk), however ISW has not observed visual confirmation of this claim.

Russian troops have also recently advanced within Chasovoy Yar and in the area southeast of the city. Geolocated footage released on October 17 shows that Russian troops have recently advanced further into the eastern part of Chasovoy Yar in an intensified mechanized assault. In addition, the Russians have recently advanced into the territory of the Blok-9 mine southeast of Chasovoy Yar.

The Russians have new advances in the areas east of Kurakhovo, where they also continue to advance. ISW refers to geolocated footage from October 11 that showed the advance of Russian troops within Maksimilianivka. Russian sources, including the Ministry of Defense Russian Federation, declared on October 17 that the occupiers had completely captured Maksimilianivka, although ISW has not yet found confirmation of this claim.

In the Kursk region of the Russian Federation Russian troops advanced in the western part of the Ukrainian salient against the background of continued fighting along it. Footage with confirmed geolocation from October 17 shows the advance of Russian troops south of the Green Way (southeast of Korenevo). It is also reported that Russian forces continued fighting southeast of Korenevo near Lyubimivka, Mala Lokna, and Novoivanivka; and to the south of Suzhi near Plekhovo.

At the same time, there are reports that Ukrainian forces counterattacked southeast of Korenevo in the direction of Tolstoy Lug, Lyubimivka, Zeleny Slyakh, and Nizhny Klin; and to the southeast of Suja near Ruska Konopelka. One of the “Russian” soldiers said that the rainy weather is currently affecting the operations of Russia and Ukraine in the Kursk region.
