Details: The US-based human rights group HRANA confirmed the deaths of 490 protesters and 48 security forces, and the arrest of more than 10,600 people in two weeks of unrest, according to the latest figures obtained from activists inside and outside Iran.

What preceded: According to the human rights organization Human Rights Activists in Iran, as of Friday evening, at least 65 people, most of whom were protesters, had died during the protests. The organization said more than 2,300 people had been arrested and the protests had spread to 180 cities in Iran.
Prehistory:
- Mass protests have been ongoing in Iran since December 28. Initially, due to the collapse of the national currency and huge inflation, the traders at the Grand Bazaar in Tehran staged a strike. Then the protests covered almost the entire country.
- On January 10, US President Donald Trump said that the United States is ready to help Iran in its struggle for freedom.
- According to the media, Trump’s representatives discussed a possible attack on Iran, including a large-scale air strike on several Iranian military facilities. Also dIn a telephone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio discussed the possible intervention of the United States in the situation in Iran.
- Iran warned the United States on Sunday that any attack by the United States would result in Tehran retaliating.
