Details: In his address, Berse emphasized the importance of the current work of the Council of Europe, which “plays a central role in ensuring the equality and dignity of every person.”

“During my mandate, I will work with you tirelessly, with passion and commitment to ensure a future in which every European can live in the freedom that comes with democratic security,” he assured.

Speaking about the challenges and priorities of his work, the new Secretary General of the Council of Europe emphasized that the first among them “is, of course, our need to support our member state, Ukraine.”

“Ukraine is fighting for its democratic future in the conditions of the aggressive war of the Russian Federation. Supporting this country will remain our number one priority,” Alain Berse emphasized.

We will remind you that the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe elected a new secretary general of the organization on June 25 – he became a Swiss politician, former chairman of the Federal Council of Switzerland, Alain Berse.

His predecessor, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Croatia Maria Pejčinovych-Burich, decided not to run for a second term.

Immediately after his election, the new Secretary General of the Council of Europe also said that Ukraine and its support would be his priority in office.
